#Privacy: Overwhelming 77% of UK workers lack basic cyber training

A survey by Centrify, has revealed that 77% of UK workers have admitted to not receiving any form of cyber-skills training.

The survey of 2,000 full-time UK workers revealed that in addition to the absence of basic cyber training, 69% of respondents admitted to not being confident in their own ability when protecting their own data.

The survey also identified that 27% of workers use the same passwords for multiple accounts, including social media and work email. This put their personal security and their company at risk from threat actors.

Additionally, 14% of UK workers have admitted to recording their passwords in an unsecured handwritten notebook, or on their office desk.

These findings comes at the beginning of European Union’s CyberSecMonth, which is a campaign that aims to raise awareness on cybersecurity threats, and promote cybersecurity among organisations and citizens.

A further 14% of respondents do not utilise multi-factor authentication for apps or services as a cybersecurity measure, unless required to do so. Experts have warned that employers can land themselves in hot water due to their lackluster approach.

Andy Heather, VP, Centrify said:

“In an age where cyber attacks have emerged as one of the most ruthless and successful forms of crime that can be committed against a business on a large scale, it is astounding to hear that so many UK companies neglect to instil even the most basic cyber security measures in their employees. Just one misplaced password could result in the theft of millions of sensitive company documents, personal information and financial fraud, allowing hackers access to critical data.

“Tackling this issue requires urgent investment in cyber skills training and adopting a zero-trust approach, to further reduce the risk of weak passwords leaving easy entry points and to ensure malicious parties cannot run riot in company systems with stolen log-in credentials.”
