#Privacy: DPO: the UK’s second highest emerging job

A new report by LinkedIn has revealed that artificial intelligence and tech roles are among the UK’s fastest-growing jobs.

In its first ever “2020 Emerging Jobs Report” for the United Kingdom, LinkedIn conducted an analysis on all its members with a public profile that has held a full-time position within the UK during the past five years.

The report revealed that the number one emerging job in the UK is an Artificial Intelligence Specialist. Research by McKinsey found that AI could potentially deliver a 22% boost to the UK economy by 2030.

The second most emerging job in the UK is Data Protection Officer, to which LinkedIn reported that since the enactment of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK Data Protection Act 2018, there has been 24 times more Data Protection Officers in the UK than there were in 2015.

The many industries hiring DPOs include financial organisations, government administration, information technology and services, hospital and healthcare and nonprofit organisation management.

Cyber Security Specialist, Data Scientist, DevOps Engineer and Robotics Engineer, were all included in LinkedIn’s top-15 emerging jobs.

The report noted that whilst almost 33% of talent working in emerging jobs are currently employed by IT companies and businesses within the computer software industry, the pharmaceutical industry reported to have the highest year-on-year growth with an increase of 49%, followed by consumer goods (+48%) and higher education (+48%).

Unfortunately, the report shows a distinct gender gap, with over 65% of all these emerging jobs being held by males, to which the telecommunications industry have the greatest imbalance with (81:19).
